$4 Coiled Hair Stella Could Sell for $1 5 Million at Bonhams Auction
Rare 1880 United States $4 gold coin could potentially sell for $1.5 million at auction.
Full Story:
An 1880 gold coin could fetch up to US$1.5 million when it is auctioned on September 23.
The
$4 Coiled Hair Stella, which was struck in the U.S. but never released
for circulation, will be sold at auction by Bonhams in Los Angeles as
part of a 27-piece coin lot valued at up to $8 million.
Paul Song, director of rare coins at Bonhams said the lot is impressive because each coin is a miniature work of art.
[Paul Song, Director Rare Coins]:
"I've
never handled a collection that's worth potentially upwards of $6
million to $8 million total with only 27 lots. That's an average lot
value of almost $300,000 per coin. That may not be a Monet painting but
in my world, that's pretty amazing. It's been a privilege to handle
them, and they are gorgeous, just because they're gold, perfectly struck
and the designs are really incredible."
The 1880 $4 Coiled Hair Stella is valued the highest out of the lot, with six grams of pure gold in it.
There are only about a dozen of these coins in existence.
The exhibition is open for public viewing from September 20-22 and the coin lot will go up for auction on September 23.
